Ron Jacobsohn Reviews The Art of Racing in the Rain

Every dog owner has at some point looked into his k-9’s eyes and wondered what they were thinking? Hollywood too has had its love affair with our four-legged friends trying to give us an insight into what they are thinking. Just think about movies like Marley & Me, A Dog’s Purpose, the Air Buds movies, The Secret Life of Pets, Isle of Dogs to Look Who’s Talking Now to name a few. In The Art of Racing in the Rain, we follow Seattle-based race car driver Denny Swift and his Golden Retriever companion, Enzo, who serves as the narrator of the story. And Enzo knows how to tell a story, there is not going to be a dry eye in the audience by the end of this flick, that is one thing you can definitely count on. While The Art of Racing in the Rain is no masterpiece, its heartwarming, cute, and sweet with life lessons that everyone can relate to and it’s safe for kids and adults alike. It’s as Hollywood mainstream that can be, but honestly who can resist a cute dog movie… although I shouldn’t… I am giving it a Thumbs Up!

In this creeper we find the Warren’s, Ed & Lorraine, who are investigation a sacred glass. Locked away in that church, so she can’t do her mischief, is (you guessed it) Annabelle. One night when the Warren’s are out and their daughter is under the guidance of her knuckleheads babysitters, all hell breaks loose when one them can’t resist going into the ghost museum, poking around and, of course, unlock the case of that creepy Victorian devil doll.

Making his directorial debut, Gary Dauberman, is not a stranger to the franchise, as the writer of the first two Annabelle flicks. Dauberman is an expert in squeezing anticipatory sweat out of his audiences and in Annabelle Comes Home he continues to scare big time, I would even dare to say more than the first two flicks, yet somehow it is missing some heart to balance all the evil.

Name your fear trigger… Annabelle Comes Home most likely has it, but is it enough to make a successful horror movie? No doubt it is a well made genre flick yet it lacks the tongue-in-cheek moments we have been accustomed to in the current day popular horror genre. Nothing about Annabelle Comes Home suggests run see it for me, its a Thumbs Down from me.

    Ron Jacobsohn Reviews Allied

This is the much anticipated big screen coupling between Brad Pitt and Academy Award Winner, Marion Cotillard, which doesn’t disappoint visually but falls flat when it comes to chemistry.

Director Robert Zemeckis is a great visual master and Allied is no exception. Creating the World War II era Morocco and England was carefully crafted and looks stunningly believable, but what does not come across is sense of urgency, the drama and tragic outcome that fails to impact. It almost feels like Zemeckis gets lost in a movie where he doesn’t need to create effects and stunts and animatied characters that transcend into the real world.

Pitt and Cortillard are phenomenal actors so it was quite disappointing that I didn’t get drawn into this tragic story of two spies falling in love and trying to life in suburban wartime England. I am sure the traumatic end of the movie was heart wrenching on paper but it just doesn’t deliver on the big screen.

Allied was going to be this big awards contender for Paramount but it feels like it’s falling short of being Oscar caliber. I had such high expectations going into it because of all the coverage the maybe love affair between the two stars got in the BradGelina divorce media blitz but it just wasn’t there.

I give “Allied” a THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE.

    Ron Jacobsohn Reviews Disney’s Moana

Disney Animation has produced yet another master piece with the studio’s fifty-sixth animated movie, Moana.

This Polynesian mythological story that was totally re-written for this CG Animated flick, and as has been the case with other Disney flicks now will be forever be engraved in people’s mind as fact.

Moana, the twelfth princess in the Disney Universe and the first Polynesian one, tells the story of the people of the Oceania, who for a thousand years stopped their voyages… leave it to the teenage daughter of the chief of Motunui to show everyone that the magic of the vast ocean is just waiting to be concurred yet again… and did we mention the demi-god, Maui!!!

Moana is supercharged with so much enchantment, eye-popping visuals, brilliantly crafted heroes… and not to mention kick-ass girl power to make every family outing a fantastic one.

I took my twins to see the movie and we all just couldn’t stop talking about the movie hours after the screening… so that alone deserves a THUMBS UP.
