Following his 15 years absence from the big screen, actor-director-writer, Warren Beatty, is back at age 79 portraying legendary eccentric business mogul, Howard Hughes.
Beatty, is already ten years older today than the age when Hughes passed away but that did not stop him from casting himself in that role… being he is the director and could choose whoever he wanted.
The one thing you can’t take away from Beatty is that he has done a superb job casting his supporting cast, which includes Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Candice Bergen, Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Oliver Platt, Alden Ehrenrich and Lilly Collins. And speaking of Collins, following in her daddy’s, Phil Collins, footsteps, she sings the theme song, that actually hits a nerve with almost everyone who watches the flick.
Rules Don’t Apply is Beatty’s fifth movie as a director (and the first one he directed in eighteen years), which has many question if by directing Rules Don’t Apply he might not have stained his flawless choices as a director with classics like Reds and Bulworth.
The script of Rules Don’t Apply doesn’t really know what it wants to be, it is not quite a comedy, not quite a drama and not quite a bio-pic… What it does have is great acting and it was beautifully shot… I give it an undecided THUMPS IN THE MIDDLE.
