Ron Jacobsohn Reviews Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them definitely feels like a first scene from a movie that someone at the studios said about: let’s burn the $180 million on the screen and do it so that everyone can see exactly how much money we burnt on this production. Even though every few seconds something new explodes, implodes, or comes out of a suitcase, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them actually is not by far the most expensive Harry Potter franchise movie, some of the later flicks already cost the studio well over a quarter of a billion dollars.

In what is set to be an at least five movie franchise for the WB, this first installment throws us right into the midst of it and only later starts explaining what is actually going on.

The premise starts with Newt Scamander played by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, an employee of the British Ministry of Magic, arriving at Prohibition-era New York with a suitcase full of fantastic beasts. A chance meeting with a wannabe pastry chef at the bank has the suitcase mistakenly exchanged and all hell breaks loose as the beasts break out of the suitcase and Scamander gets into deep trouble with the Magical Congress of the United States of America.

But fear not, two-hours-and-thirteen minutes later all will end well as our protagonist embarks back on his journey to England, leaving behind a whole slew of characters we still don’t know what role they will play in future installments of the franchise.

This definitely is a typical genre movie with a great bonus: JK Rowlings’ imaginative mind, which is the gift that keeps on giving where the imagination just never ceases to wow you.

I loved the movie and give it a well-deserved THUMBS UP.
