Ron Jacobsohn Reviews Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

I am not entirely sure what the writers of this movie wanted to achieve by taking a Sleeping Beauty scenario and giving it a Game of Thrones spin. The whole premise is about palace intrigues, conspiracies, and an unhealthy obsession with war. It almost feels unnatural to watch a movie from the studio we tend to be blamed for brainwashing our daughters with fairy-tales about Prince Charming who is going to come and save the day, release this type of material.

As for the cast, truth be told,  no matter what she does, Angelina Jolie’s screen presence is so formidable that just looking at her is enough, and in this movie, she doesn’t do much more than just be there (something that probably came with a hefty paycheck she couldn’t refuse), Michelle Pfeiffer, on the other hand, uses every trick in the book to come across as ridiculous, which leaves very little space for little Elle Fanning to leave her mark.

It feels as if the people behind this movie weren’t really sure why they really needed a sequel for the original Maleficent, other than the fact that the studio wanted a sequel that would earn more money than the original.

This movie is too scary for kids, who loved the type of (almost) innocent intrigues of Frozen or Wicked, and a bit too dull for the older kids and adults, so that kinda leaves it hanging in an in-between mess.  I will have to go with an undecided Thumbs in the Middle on this one.
