A Delightful Dive into a Cinematic Gem

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that delights both the heart and the mind. After receiving positive recognition at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Nathan Silvers’ Between the Temples starring the charming Jason Schwartzman and the legendary Carole King brings warmth and a narrative that’s equal parts whimsical and heartwarming.

Jason Schwartzman, known mostly for his quirky roles, channels a perfect blend of humor and sincerity, while the a force of nature from the world of music, Carole King, dazzles onscreen with her natural charisma and undeniable talent. Together, they create pure magic.

If you’re in the mood for a good laugh and a moving storyline, this film won’t disappoint.
Between the Temples, will stand out as a flick with charm and originality, so grab your popcorn! A definite Thumbs Up.

A Familiar Journey into the Unknown

Was another Alien movie truly necessary? Alien: Romulus brings us back to the haunting depths of space with a new crew of explorers who accidentally reawaken the menacing Xenomorphs. From the outset, the film treads a well-worn path, echoing the narratives of its predecessors. The characters are the usual suspects: the fearless leader, the inexperienced rookie, the jokester, and the skeptic. While the cast delivers competent performances, they’re hindered by a lack of character depth, leaving little room for emotional investment as they play into familiar archetypes.

Where Alien: Romulus excels is in its visual spectacle. The special effects are outstanding, and the Xenomorphs are as horrifyingly mesmerizing as ever. The film’s dark, foreboding atmosphere, combined with a few genuinely heart-pounding moments, ensures that viewers experience some tension-filled scenes. However, these thrilling moments are scattered, causing the rest of the film to drag.

If you’re seeking a space horror that pushes the boundaries of the genre, Alien: Romulus might disappoint. It’s a a solid entry to the franchise, delivering the expected thrills without breaking new ground. The movie fulfills its role but doesn’t elevate itself beyond the average. So, grab your popcorn, enjoy the nostalgic nods, but temper your expectations, this one won’t leave you in awe. Thumbs Down from, I wanted to expect a little more effort.

    Ron Jacobsohn Reviews The Instigators

The Instigators is an underwhelming mix of action/drama, it centers around two brothers, Jack (Matt Damon) and Mike (Casey Affleck), who find themselves pulled into a high-stakes heist.

The impressive cast not only includes two Academy Awards winners, Damon and Affleck, but it also an Academy Awards nominee, Jeremy Renner, and a very accomplished actress, Michelle Monaghan, who all really try to do their best with the material and kinda fall flat. The story is relatively straightforward, with a few predictable twists and turns, but it lacks an emotional impact to make it memorable. The chemistry between Damon and Affleck feels somewhat forced, and their performances lack depth. Director Doug Liman’s effort is falling short of its potential with a talented cast and intriguing premise.

With a strong cast and an experienced director, the expectations for The Instigators was high, but it did not keep on its promise. I give it a THUMBS DOWN.

Ron Jacobsohn Reviews Deadpool & Wolverine

This is probably one of the boldest attempts to combine two of Marvel’s most unconventional anti-heroes into a single flick. Unfortunately, Deadpool & Wolverine ends up feeling like a muddled mash-up rather than a seamless fusion of the two characters.

Having said that, with a cast including Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their iconic roles of Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, bringing an instant chemistry of the mega star caliber type allowing for some genuinely entertaining moments throughout even if the storyline was not perfect.

Honestly, the script fails to capitalize on its potential. The plot is a jumbled mess of forced humor and predictable action sequences that don’t quite land. The issue this movie suffers from is that it swings between trying to be a gritty Wolverine story and a zany Deadpool romp, often leaving viewers unsure of what kind of experience they’re supposed to be having.

Bottom line is, if you are a deadhead fan of the characters and don’t mind a bit of chaos in what’s going on, you’d probably somehow survive it, for me this was a bit too much, I give it a THUMBS DOWN.
